04/03/2008 :: “I am appalled by the acts of violence that have taken place in Gaza during the past few days. A large number of civilians, including many children, have been killed or severely injured during Israeli military attacks. The damage to infrastructure and residential areas has also been extensive. I deeply deplore this use of violence and wish to convey my most sincere sympathy to the families of those affected,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre.
“Norway has on several occasions condemned the indiscriminate rocket attacks on Israel, which is terrorising the civilian population there. We call for an immediate halt to these attacks,” Mr Støre said.
“Israel has the right to self-defence. However, I deeply deplore Israel’s disproportionate use of violence in Gaza and the terrible suffering it is inflicting on the civilian population there. I urge Israel to exercise the utmost restraint and to refrain from any actions that further escalate the level of violence,” said Mr Støre.
“Humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gaza must be granted free access. It is extremely important to implement immediate measures to this end,” Mr Støre added.
“I urge all parties to bring all acts of violence to an immediate halt. It is essential that the important political negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians that were launched in the wake of the Annapolis Conference last year are not jeopardised,” the Foreign Minister stressed.
